History of the Guardians of Our Valley

"Los Guardianes de Nuestro Valle" (The Guardians of Our Valley) is a group of enthusiastic youth which formed in September 1989 to fulfill the need they saw for conservation and development of the natural riches of the valley. It's founders were Georgina Hernández y Edgardo Pérez Pastrana, a young couple concerned about conservation of natural ecosystems of the Cuatrociénegas valley who collaborated with PROFAUNA, A.C., a non-profit association dedicated to the study and protection of flora and fauna.

The group started by receiving training in environmental education under the sponsorship of PROFAUNA, A.C. and later carried out activities which put in practice the knowledge they acquired in this course. At that time, the group consisted of 13 active participants:

WILLIE ZAMORA AYALA
LAURA MARTINEZ CAMPOS
RUBEN FLORES CEDILLO
JOSE M. VILLARREAL HDZ.
CESAR A. PINALES LUMBRERAS
JESUS A. ARELLANO LOPEZ
GONZALO ZAMORA AYALA
GABRIEL ZAMORA AYALA
BLANCA JORDAN GUZMAN

ERNESTO DE LOS SANTOS
SONIA YESENIA SONORA A.
GABRIEL GARCIA GUEVARA
MIGUEL HINOSTROZA

Among the activities of the group were elaboration and erection in the valley of signs promoting habitat protection, participation and support of various ecological forums, environmental education, and clean-up campaigns at sites most in need of it. All funds and materials necessary to carry out these functions were obtained by their own means.

While they worked time passed and some, for various reasons, found it necessary to separate from the group while others with the desire to collaborate became new members and received training conducted by the founding members. To date, about 50 members have participated in the club.

Today the group continues working with the same enthusiasm, still counting with five of the original founding members, and collaborates with the city government, PROFAUNA, A.C. and the city schools. They also work in the forest fire brigade, serve as interpretive guides for tourists, participate in reforestation efforts, continue to clean the pools, springs and other areas most impacted by littering, and generally promote environmental education.

The Guardians now count with the support of the local community and continue working voluntarily without financial support. It's good to know that there are young people dedicated to this work and that they pursue this labor without personal economic benefit. They will continue working as long as anything remains to preserve in the region to help assure that future generations will have the opportunity to know and enjoy the natural marvels that we have today.

WILLIE ZAMORA AYALA
LAURA MARTINEZ CAMPOS
RUBEN FLORES CEDILLO
JOSE M. VILLARREAL HDZ.
CESAR A. PINALES LUMBRERAS
JESUS A. ARELLANO LOPEZ
GONZALO ZAMORA AYALA
GABRIEL ZAMORA AYALA
BLANCA JORDAN GUZMAN

ERNESTO DE LOS SANTOS
SONIA YESENIA SONORA A.
GABRIEL GARCIA GUEVARA
MIGUEL HINOSTROZA
