Arid Land Ecosystems

The 29th Annual Meeting of DESERT FISHES COUNCIL will be hosted by U.S. National Park Service on 20-23 NOV (TH-SUN) 1997 at Furnace Creek CA (Death Valley National Park). Registration begins WED afternoon (19th); an informal mixer is scheduled in the hotel bar that evening. A symposium ("Fish Barriers as a Management Tool," chaired by Sally Stefferud) will be TH (20th). DFC business meeting and banquet are FR (21st). Field trip on SUN (23rd) will visit Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, and perhaps Cottonball Marsh.

Rates are $83.00/day (motel) and $70./day (cabin), plus 9% tax. Reservations must be at least 30 days in advance and, to insure refund, cancellations must be within 48 hours of anticipated arrival. Contact Furnace Creek Ranch [(760)-786-2345; Fax 786-2307]. Indicate you are with DFC when making reservations. Camping is available; call NPS early to reserve (800-365-CAMP).

TRAVEL TO/FROM DEATH VALLEY via airline/ rental car will be disrupted by the COMDEX computer convention in Las Vegas (17-21 November). Airline and car reservations must be scheduled far in advance. A second option is to fly into Ontario CA and rent a car for travel to DFC (however, this adds 100 additional road miles). Data on car pooling and room sharing are available on the DFC home page (see below).

ONLY SOCIETY MEMBERS MAY PRESENT PAPERS; these, in turn, must be relevant to DFC's mission. Oral presentations are 15 total minutes (including questions). Each speaker is limited to one presentation; poster presentations are encouraged. Abstracts must be RECEIVED in electronic format by appropriate individual (see below) on or before 1 September (MON). No presentation will be scheduled without (a) a correctly-formatted abstract; (b) preregistation; (c) payment of 1997 dues. Space is limited; order of receipt may determine acceptance of papers.

ALL ABSTRACTS MUST BE IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT [e-mail or disk to Gary Garrett; TX Parks and Wildl.; HOH Research Station HC 7 Box 62; Ingram, TX 78025 USA; (210)-866-3356; Fax (210)-866-3549; GPG_at_KTC.COM]. Hard copy abstracts are for those without computer access; prior approval MUST be obtained before submittal [contact M. Douglas; Dept. Zoology; AZ State Univ.; Tempe AZ 85287-1501 USA; (602)-965-3571; Fax:(602)-965-0362; M.DOUGLAS_at_ASU.EDU].

BILINGUAL INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS are in DFC Proceedings 24-27, and on WWW (http:// www.utexas.edu/depts/tnhc/fish/dfc). Members without access to either can receive instructions from Gary Garrett (address above). Improperly-formatted abstracts will be rejected. Other data about meeting can be obtained from the DFC listserver. Subscribe by sending e-mail to: LISTPROC_at_MCFEELEY.CC.UTEXAS.EDU. The body of the message must contain ONLY the line "subscribe DFC-L firstname lastname" (with your own first and last names substituted in the appropriate places).

AREA REPORTS ARE COORDINATED BY ECOREGION and can be multi-authored; any group can contribute. Contact either Nadine Kanim [(916)-842-5763; KANIM_at_MAIL.FWS.GOV], or area coordinators directly (see DFC WWW).

A MEETING REGISTRATION FORM (included in this mailing; also on DFC WWW) must be received by 1 SEPT. to avoid a late registration fee. Refunds (less $5.00 processing fee) are possible. Membership and preregistration (by 1 SEPT.) are both mandatory for abstract submittal. 1997 membership applications were posted very early this year. Contact M. Douglas (see above) to receive one (or see DFC WWW).

MEETING RESOLUTIONS must be received on/ before 1 SEPT. in electronic format. Send to: Walt Courtenay; Dept. Bio. Sci.; FL Atlantic Univ.; Boca Raton, FL 33431-0991; FAX:(407-367-2749); COURTENW_at_FAU.EDU.

STUDENT MEMBERS will have two prize categories for presentations: Carl L. Hubbs Award (best overall student paper) and Frances Hubbs Miller Award (best paper presented by a Mexican student). All students are encouraged to compete.

LIMITED TRAVEL GRANTS are available to present papers at Death Valley (students and Mexican nationals have priority). The number of grants (and their amount) varies yearly; 4-5 ($200-$400 each) are generally awarded. To receive an application, notify Phil Pister [voice/ fax: (760)-872-8751; phil at desertfishes dot org] by 1 August 1997. Applicants will be notified by 21 August.
