DFC Online Store instructions
The information below will answer the most common questions related to the way the store works and help you use the store efficiently and quickly. This window will stay open for handy reference after you click on the link below to go to the store itself.
- UT EID? - We recommend simply clicking the "Continue" button and not worrying about the UTEID option. It is not necessary to get a UT EID and it makes absolutely no difference in the security of the processing of your transaction. The biggest advantage to getting an EID is the ability to save your profile and thus save you typing when you next come back to the store for another transaction. "WHY UTEID CHECKOUT" links near the bottom of the checkout page will explain in more detail.
- TAX EXEMPTION? - Tax is NOT added to any item we sell, so you can simply check NO and save some steps if you are asked if you want a tax exemption.
- SHIPPING? - The shipping address is what we'll use in your membership record and is where we'll send any DFC mailings, such as renewal notices and Proceedings. We do not charge shipping for any items sold in the store, but the shipping address is sometimes required as the only way we can collect an address from you other than the one associated with the credit card that you use for payment. Some use credit cards with billing addresses that differ from the address they might want to use for their DFC membership, but the credit card will not be processed unless you use the card's billing address in the billing address part of the transaction (below).
- WANT MORE THAN ONE MEMBERSHIP OR MEETING REGISTRATION? Purchase > 1 membership or meeting registration via multiple transactions, changing the shipping name and address as needed in each transaction to that of the individual for whom membership and/or meeting registration is being purchased. Enter the first one and go through checkout and payment, then come back and repeat the process for the next one. An EID (above) may come in handy here to save your information. If we were to allow > 1 membership or registration to be bought in any single transaction, we would get only one name and address, but the separate members for whom the memberships and registrations were purchased surely intend for their own names and addresses to be used in the DFC membership database. By restricting transactions to only one membership and one meeting registration, the shipping address provides the correct data for each individual.
- PURCHASE ORDER OR CHECK INSTEAD OF PAYING BY CREDIT CARD? Sorry, but we no longer accept either for purchases made through the online store. Please pay by credit card via the online store if at all possible. If you absolutely must use a check, look up prices and descriptions in the store, paste them into an email to the membership secretary that also includes your mailing address, and then snail mail your payment to the membership secretary.
- CREDIT CARD AUTHORIZATION PROBLEMS? Credit card verification is contracted to Verisign and is beyond our control and a number of DFC store users have reported problems. The Billing name, address, etc. in the input screen for credit card information must all match what's on file with the bank that issued your credit card. That address is the one that appears on your monthly bank statements. The shipping information (above) can be different. PO boxes are also problematic. VeriSign wants the actual number before the words “PO Box”, so try “123 PO Box” instead of “PO Box 123”. Failure to enter the correct CSC code has also been a common cause of failures. The CSC code is the 3- or 4-digit code on the back of the credit card that is intended to ensure that the purchaser has physical control of the card (that they haven’t just stolen a number online, etc.). See also the CSC code popup help box in the store.
