Dr. Clark Hubbs "walking on water"

Those interested in Dr. Hubbs and his legacy may also be interest in the Hubbs Ichthyological Society that was formed shortly after the death of Dr. Hubbs.

Dr. Clark Hubbs, long-time member and supporter of the Desert Fishes Council, and recent recipient (together with his wife Cathy) of its Lifetime Service Award, passed away on February 3, 2008. He will be fondly remembered by all members of the DFC as a constant presence in the audience at very nearly every annual meeting since the early years of the group in the 1970's, quick to question or share comments, and as a frequent presenter of his own research. For more than three decades Clark and Cathy very rarely missed any of the DFC's annual meetings and consistently contributed generously to the Council's student and Latin American member travel grant program to help others attend the group's meetings.

The family provided an obituary that contains information about memorial services and suggestions for donations in memory of Clark. More about Clark can be found in a biography published in 2000 in the journal of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, Copeia, and on his own web page.

Two memorial events will be held on Friday February 8:

  • A small memorial church service will be held for church members and close personal and scientific friends at 2:30 PM at the Congregational Church of Austin, 408 W. 23rd Street, Austin, Texas 78705 (phone: 512-472-2370). Click here for directions. Expect very limited parking and likely limited space in the church.

  • A separate informal and open reception and celebration of Clark's life will start at 6:00 PM in a much more spacious venue - the atrium of the University of Texas' J.J. Pickle Research Campus Commons at 10100 Burnet Road, Austin 78758. Complimentary refreshments will be served and a cash bar will be open. Maps and driving directions are available (or 30.3872°;-97.7266°). The Commons building is the first large building on your right as you enter Pickle Campus from Burnet Road. Park on the building's east, west or north (near the water tower). Unlike the main UT campus, finding parking at Pickle Campus is never a problem at any time. A slide show of photos from Clark's life compiled by the family will be running and 4 laptops and projectors are available to allow participants to run their own short PowerPoints during the event. Bring your show on a USB drive or CD and, if possible, automate your show it so it can run unattended. Photos may also be emailed to Dean Hendrickson (deanhend@mail.utexas.edu).

Both cards and flowers may be sent to the church, but please see the family's suggestions for gifts in the obituary.

Later this year there will be another ceremony at a meeting of one of the professional societies in which Clark was active.
