At its meetings, DFC gives awards to students and has other special awards given to individual professionals and groups:

BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARDS

The Desert Fishes Council has a long history of presenting awards at its annual meetings for the best papers presented by student members (membership must be current on the deadline date for abstracts):

  • The Robert Rush and Frances Hubbs Miller Award has been given since 1986 to the best oral paper presented by a student from Mexico or other Latin American country.
  • The Carl L. Hubbs Award  has been given since 1986 to the overall best student paper, regardless of their country affiliation.
  • The Poster Award was established in 2006 for the overall best poster presented by a student.

Those wishing to compete for any of these awards must indicate desire to compete when submitting their abstract by completing the Award field in the abstract submission form. Criteria on which awards are evaluated are outlined in the forms that the award competition judges use.

As revised at the 2000 meeting by membership vote, the rules state that competitors must be first author of their papers and the research reported upon must have been done while a student. Two co-authors are allowed, but the research should have been initiated solely by the student. If others were involved in organizing and/or completing the research, then the paper should not be submitted in the Hubbs or Miller award categories.

Certificates are awarded to winners at the Council’s general business meeting at or near the end of each meeting. Students competing for awards are strongly encouraged to attend the business meeting.

OTHER AWARDS

  • The W. L. Minckley Conservation Award was established in 2010 to  recognize individuals or organizations whose work has significantly influenced the conservation of desert aquatic ecosystems and/or the native organisms dependent on them.  Individuals or organizations will be recognized who have demonstrated their commitment to preservation of sustainable ecosystem management of desert aquatic ecosystems and their native biota through some combination of research, publication, outreach, mentoring, development of public policy, individual activities on private land, or particularly creative approaches that are aimed to further perpetuate into the indefinite future healthy, naturally functioning desert aquatic ecosystems and the organisms dependent upon them. This award is presented every third year when the Council meets in Death Valley.

Nominations for the W. L. Minckley Conservation Award should include the nominee’s curriculum vitae (if for an individual) and a minimum of two supporting letters that detail the nominee’s specific contributions as mentioned above.  Nominations made by multiple individuals for one person or agency must submit their own letter detailing why they nominated the individual or agency.  All letters must be signed and dated by the nominator(s).  Nominations, including self-nominations, should be submitted by 15 October to the current President of the Council.
